To capture the panorama of the Kanchenjunga range from a stone's throw distance, the popular trek in Sikkim, the Dzongri and Goecha La trek from Yuksom is the perfect pick. The journey allows you to travel across the rich alpine forest that melds with the vast biosphere of Sikkim. All throughout the trail you can get acquainted with varied species of wild flowers and avifauna and animals spread across different altitudes. Dzongri at an elevation of 4,020 meters and Goecha la at 4,940 meters is a hone to click in one frame the Pandim and Kanchenjunga massif at 6,691 meters and 8,586 meters. The trail follows through the vast forest of rhododendrons with several downhill and uphill treks till it expunges to twitchy tracks through narrow ridges and stony paves. The Dzongri and Goecha La trek is no doubt one of the best treks in the Indian Himalayan region and is thus mentioned in the diaries of every trekker. The moderate to strenuous trip further fascinates the trekker with several monasteries tucked within the mountains. Steeped with history, these monasteries dilate a diorama of the footsteps of Buddhism in Sikkim and also exhibit the cultural essence of the Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalis.
The trek from Yuksom, which is at an elevation of 1,780 meters, follows a gradual climb to Tshoka at 2,743 meters through the dense tropical forest of pine, bamboo, fir, oaks and flowering trees like magnolias and rhododendrons, which is a home to several wildlife and bird species at different altitude. Thereafter the trek turns to Dzongri via a steep ascend to the alp of Phedang at 3,650 meters. There is a day of acclimatization at Dzongri and one can reach Dzongri Top and take in the panoramic view of Kabru at 7,353 meters, Ratong at 6,678 meters, Kanchenjunga at 8,586 meters, Koktang at 6,147 meters, Pandim at 6,691 meters and Narsing at 5,825 meters. Towards the west, the Singalila Ridge, which separates Sikkim from Nepal, can be seen. The trail continues to Goecha La en route to Thangsing at 3,800 meters and lake Samiti that encircles a beautiful alpine meadow. The trek to Goecha La continues with a gentle gradient till you hit the glaciated tracks. The vicinity is further embellished with several small glacial lakes. The trek downhill to Yuksom follows the same route.
The trek to Dzongri - Goecha La requires an Inner Line Permit. The best time to go for the trek, which takes approximately 11 - 12 days, is during the months of May, June, September and October. During the winters the tracks are usually bedded with a thick layer of snow making the journey more difficult.
We will drive to the Darjeeling, which is approximately a four hour journey. During the journey, witness the beautiful villages and lush green tea plantations.
Today we will drive to Yuksom, which will be the base of our trek. Dinner and overnight stay in guesthouse/tents.
The trek from Yuksom begins at the local market. We will be required to cross the four bridges and climb steeply towards the north east to reach Bakhim. The trail will continue for another 3 kms and pass through the forests of magnolia and rhododendron to reach Tshokh. Upon reaching Tshokh, the camps will be set. Dinner and overnight stay at the camps.
We will trek through the village of Tshokh and up to the alp of Phidang (3650 m). The trail will continue further towards Dzongri. On arrival, the camps will be set up and overnight stay.
This day is reserved to give the body much needed rest and acclimatization. You can climb up to the top of Dzongri and see the beauty of the various mountain peaks like Kabru (7353 m), Ratong (6678 m), Kanchenjunga (8534 m), Koktang (6147 m), Pandim (6691 m) and Narsing (5825 m). Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
The trek from Dzongri continues along the bank of the river towards east. After completing the trek of the hill, we will be required to cross the valley and bridge over the Prek Chu river. It will take around one hour to climb the bridge to Tangsiing (3800 m), which is nestled on the slopes of Mount Pandim. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
Today, we will trek to Tangsiing and for this we have to move towards north and follow a stream and alpine meadows. After trekking for nearly an hour above Tangsiing, we reach Onglathang. From Onglathang, the spectacular view of Kanchenjunga peak delights the eyes. Afterwards, we will trail through the glacial meadows to reach the pristine lake perched at Samiti. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
We will move towards the eastwards direction to start our trek to Goecha La. The trail takes us to the glacial moraine and ends at the dry lake nestled in Zemathang. By climbing over the rocks and boulders, we will finally reach on to the top of the pass. A tough scramble over rocks and boulders with a rise of 400 meters will bring us on the top of the pass. In the afternoon return to the Samiti Lake. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
On this day, we will begin retracing our steps to reach Tangsiing. From Tangsiing, we will trek to the Kokchorung (3800 m) that is a wonderful camping destination. Continue strolling towards Tsokha by taking a bypass route directly to Tsokha. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.
Trail to Yuksom as this route path is mainly downhill and easy. From here drive to Darjeeling. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel.
Early morning drive to Bagdogra and take flight for New Delhi.
