Markha Valley Trek

One of the most popular treks in the Ladakh region is the Markha Valley Trek that tickles the mind of several adventurers travelling to Ladakh. It is a traditional journey that passes through various landscapes, wildlife territory and remote villages. The Markha Valley Trek when winds onto the Hemis National Park and Rumbuk Valley, one can acquaint some of the rare species of the Himalayan belt and if you are fortunate enough you may encounter a Snow Leopard. Nonetheless the valley also hosts several species like the lynx, Ladakhi Urial (a type of goat), Arghali (great Tibetan sheep), Blue sheep, Red fox, Tibetan wolf, Dhole (wild dog), Marmot and Mountain hare. Moreover this part of trekking in Ladakh region also offers serious birding that catches the eye of trekkers and bustling them with many snaps.

The Markha Valley Trek also delves into the remote and hard folklore of the Rumbuk village followed by Yurutse and Markha that fetches the explorers to mull over the indigenous culture of the Indo-Tibetans. One may also live their lifestyle for a night stepping onto the floor of traditional home stays. Further the trekking trail in Ladakh region also carves your way up to the shrines like Lhatos and Mani before entering Markha village. The journey winds and trails up to the Kongmaru La at 5100 meter wherefrom one can capture the spectacular view of the hulking high Kang Yatze peak and northwards to the peaks of the Tibetan border.

The traditional Markha Valley Trek commences from Spituk and heads up to Ganda La en route Zingchen and thereafter to Skiu, which is an isolated village and host an old monastery and ruins of an old castle that was once a rest stop for the Royal family on their way to Srinagar. From Skiu the tracks lead to Markha and thereby to Shangsumdo via Kongmaru La.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Delhi - Leh (Complete Rest in Leh for acclimatization)

Catch the flight for Leh in the morning. Meet our representative in Leh airport and transfer to the pre booked hotel. Relax and be acclimatized, as it is necessary to be accustomed to weather at such high elevation. Explore the beautiful market of Leh in evening. Overnight stay in hotel.

Day 2 Leh - Shey - Thiksey - Hemis

DAY 02: Leh - Shey - Thiksey - Hemis Today, you will go a sightseeing tour to some ancient monasteries in this area. One such monastery is Shey Gompa. It is positioned 15 kilometers from Leh. Shey was once the summer capital of Ladakh kings. About this place are positioned a number of Gompas and Stupas. Deldyan Namgyal constructed this palace in 17th century. 12 meters long Shakyamuni Buddha statue positioned inside the Dresthang Gompa is the well-known attraction of Leh.
Situated near Shey, Thiksey Gompa is at the distance of about 17 kilometers from Leh. This monastery is said to be one of the most dazzling structures in Ladakh and it belongs to Gelukspa order.
Positioned at about 45 kilometers south of Leh, Hemis is one of the most well liked and largest monasteries in Ladakh. Hemis Monastery belongs to Drukpa Order. It was founded in early 17th century. The monastery concealed in lovely valley is surrounded by streams and fronted by large Mani Walls. Relish the relaxing overnight stay at guesthouse.

Day 3 Leh - Spituk (drive) - Trek to Zingchan (3200 mts/10496 ft)

Early in the morning, leave Leh by the jeeps in order to reach Spituk. It takes an hour journey. Explore Spituk Gompa. This Gompa was constructed 500 years ago. Begin the trek from here by passing a bridge and strolling southwest of Indus River. The valley section heads to the junction of Zingchan and Indus. Make the camp near Zingchan Village. Overnight stay in camp.

Day 4 Zingchan - Yurutse (3900 mts/12792 ft) via Rumbak

It is a steep ascent to Rumbak from Zingchan. From Rumbak, one gets fascinating views of snow covered Stok Mountains. Move along the Rumbak Nala en route for Yurutse. At the village of Yurutse, you will witness the wonderful fields potatoes and barley. Overnight stay in the tents.

Day 5 Yurutse - Skiu (3100 mts/10168 ft) via Ganda La

Reach Ganda La (4900 meters) by ascending steeply from Yurutse. This pass offers the view that extends south to Zanskar Range and far-flung peaks of Himalaya. From here, there is a long descent to the village of Shingo. The trail leads into a slender gorge from this village and then leads towards Skiu. Shingo and the rivers coming from Markha Valley confluence at Skiu. Overnight stay in the tents.

Day 6 Skiu - Markha (3800 mts/12464 ft)

It is an extremely congenial climb to the Markha Valley on this day. The crosses several streams. Markha is an immaculate village with deserted fort. Overnight stay in the tents.

Day 7 Markha - Thochuntse

The settings change from Markha. We will leave behind the heavily forested sections of Lower Markha. There is no bridges so we will have to cross the river. We will come across Hankar en route to Thochuntse. Hankar is the highest village in Markha Valley. Overnight stay in the tents.

Day 8 Thochuntse - Nimaling (4700 mts/15416 ft)

The trek begins with good track with numerous small gradients and a chain of glassy ridges. There is a sequence of Mani Walls and chortens on the route. This is counted among the most stunning high valleys in Ladakh and is cosseted by Kangyatse Peak. Overnight stay in the tents.

Day 9 Nimaling - Kongmaru La (5150 mts/16892 ft) - SUMDO

We will cross to the north of Markha on this day. We will ascend to the top of the Kongmaru La (5306 meters), which is the highest one among the three passes present in region. The views from the top of this pass are amazing. You will find snowy peaks in every direction and the amazing vistas of Karakoram can be relished at the northwestern horizon on a clear day. The route then dips down to the Martselang Valley leading Martselang Stream to the Sumdo Village. Overnight stay in the tents.

Day 10 Sumdo - Hemis (4 hrs trek) - Leh

We will make an easy dip down along the Martselang on this day. At Martselang, the trail broadens into the Indus Valley. You will get the jeeps waiting for you at Martselang Village. Explore Hemis Monastery and then drive to Leh via Thiksey and Shey monasteries. Overnight stay in the hotel.

Day 11 Leh - Delhi

Reach the airport in order to catch the mesmerizing flight taking you across the main Himalayan chain to Delhi.
